Map
While you can use the map on your smartphone, it might not be the smartest choice for a hiking trip. Get a detailed map of the area you are planning to go hiking and take it along with you.

Compass
Get a good compass and learn how to use it. If you are going on a hiking trip, carrying a compass is a must. Get a compass that shows you zero to 360 degrees with two-degree increments.

Flashlight or Headlamp
Whether you are hiking during the day or night, it is important that you carry a flashlight or headlamp. Choose one that is water-resistant with rubberized bulb housing and battery compartment. Make sure you carry extra bulbs and batteries for your flashlight.

First-Aid Kit
Your first-aid kit should contain basic supplies to treat minor injuries. Make sure you have sufficient sterilized bandages, adhesive band-aids, CPR mask, and rubber gloves. Most first-aid kits will have all the necessary supplies you need.
